General guidance before exercise

  • Measure blood sugar before training; aim for around 6–8 mmol/l at the start
  • Under 4 mmol/l → always have a snack before setting off
  • Over 15 mmol/l → skip more intense exercise
  • Over 20 mmol/l → postpone exercise, drink water, measure ketones, correct blood sugar
  • Unexplained over 14 mmol/l → measure ketones

Insulin pump and exercise

The pump can be detached for a short, intense or contact sport (e.g. football, ice hockey, swimming, shower). Maximum 2 hours off at a time; longer raises the risk of ketones and high blood sugar.

Checklist for taking the pump off

  • Measure blood sugar before disconnecting
  • If possible, check blood sugar every hour while disconnected
  • Reconnect the pump within 2 h at the latest
  • If blood sugar > 14 mmol/l after reconnecting → measure ketones
  • Alternative: leave the pump connected and use a temporarily lower basal (temp basal) per the clinic's guidance

Device-specific insulin adjustments

Exact temp basal percentages and bolus adjustments are always agreed at your own clinic based on the pump model and dosing.
