Football

Diabetesliitto's exercise page mentions football as an example of a sport that builds stamina for 7–17-year-olds. There is no separate football guide in the sources, so the approach builds on the general exercise and pump guidance.

Preparation checklist

  • Measure blood sugar before training or a match
  • Fast hypo help at the side of the pitch: juice, glucose tablets, banana or raisins
  • The coach knows where the hypo treats are and who is responsible if a hypo happens
  • Re-check blood sugar 1–2 h after training, because it can still drop
  • After a low, an extra snack if needed

Pump and sensor in contact sport

  • The pump is usually off for the match or training so the device is protected from impacts and damage
  • While the pump is off it does not deliver basal insulin — keep the break as short as possible, no more than 2 hours
  • Extra tape or a protective cover over the sensor in case of contact
  • Long tournament day: reconnect the pump during breaks, do not leave it off all day
  • Make up missed basal insulin when reconnecting, per the care plan
